Chihilganis

Chihilganis
The Turkish slave officers, each of whom com-manded 40 slave subalterns, were called chihilganis. They dominated the Delhi sultanate during 1236-1266, contributing to the gradual elimination of the persons of noble lineages. The indiscipline and mutual jealousies of the chihilganis led to the disorganization and factional fights under Iltutmish's successors (1236-1266). The chi-hilganis were finally eliminated by Ghiyas al-Din Balban (1266-1286) who, ironically enough, had emerged from their own ranks.
